Sicily

Welcome to Sicily Month on The Italian Wine Shop, where every bottle is an invitation to embark on a sensory journey through Italy’s most enchanting landscapes. This month, we invite you to immerse yourself in the sun-kissed realm of Sicilian wines, where ancient vines weave stories of abundance, biodiversity, sustainability and the sweet allure of “la dolce vita.”

Sicily, the jewel of the Mediterranean, is a canvas painted with lush greenery and kissed by the azure waves of the sea. Here, the magic of nature comes alive in every sip of wine. Picture sprawling vineyards surrounded by citrus groves, olive orchards, and aromatic herbs. The abundant flora and fauna of the island create a symphony of scents and flavours that dance harmoniously in your glass.

In Sicily, you’ll find vineyards nestled amidst fragrant orange blossoms and almond trees. The vines, lovingly tended by generations of winemakers, are graced by the Mediterranean breeze and bathed in the golden Sicilian sun. These vines bear witness to the island’s rich history and diverse culture, making every bottle a testament to time-honoured traditions and the enduring spirit of Sicily.

A Journey of The Senses

Sicily boasts a treasure trove of indigenous grape varieties, each with its own unique story to tell. From the elegant Nero d’Avola to the crisp Catarratto and the aromatic Grillo, these grapes are the soul of Sicilian winemaking. They have thrived here for centuries, adapting to the island’s diverse terroirs and microclimates.

As you explore our curated selection of Sicilian wines, you’ll encounter these ancient grape varieties, each carrying a piece of Sicily’s history and culture. Sip a glass of Etna Rosso, and you’ll taste the volcanic energy of Mount Etna in every drop. Imagine savoring a crisp white on a sun-dappled terrace overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean. Or sharing a rich, velvety red with friends under a canopy of stars. Sicilian wines embody the spirit of conviviality and the joy of simple pleasures.

As you explore the Sicilian wines in our collection, we encourage you to embrace the whimsical and ethereal atmosphere that this enchanting island offers. Let the flavors transport you to cobblestone streets filled with music and laughter. Feel the warmth of the Mediterranean sun in every sip and let the salty sea breeze caress your senses.

Aosta Valley

Welcome to Aosta Valley month! Here at The Italian Wine Shop, we are obsessed, and we do mean truly obsessed, with Italian wine, particularly wine that evokes memories. This month’s memory or daydream (if you’ve never visited the area) is of time spent in the mountains. Given that the Aosta Valley is cradled by the raw, rugged, imposing mountains surrounding Mont Blanc, we think of times sitting aside roaring fires, in good company, drinking deep and robust wines. Wines that embody the terroir, the altitude, the minerality, wines that taste both of crisp mountain air, of star-lit clear skies, yet feel cosy and full of, what is it the Danish say ?- “hygge?”

The Vineyard Less Travelled

This month we have hand-selected just four vineyards, two of whom are exclusive to the UK market from us, and one where production is a maximum of 1000 bottles of each wine per season, not even available outside The Aosta Valley itself. So, to say you’ll be trying wine that is symbolic of mountain “arrangiarsi”, of family, of legacy, and of experimentation, is an understatement. Given this enchanting valley’s proximity to France, sharing its border, you’ll discover French wines, made the Italian way. Enjoy – and take a journey through this quiet and tranquil mountain region via your palate with The Italian Wine Shop.
